COMET EXPLOSION: Almost 450 million km from Earth, Comet C/2012 X1 (LINEAR) has exploded. Amateur astronomers are reporting a 100-fold increase in the comet's brightness compared to predictions, and the comet's atmosphere or "coma" now resembles that of exploding Comet 17P/Holmes in 2007.

Region 11882 has just turned towards us and has released 2 X-Class flares within a few hours apart. This could be an interesting week here on Earth...

Earth and Mercury on the right. I thought that was chunks of sun for a second, but it's not, it's just stars in the background, but that is a big CME headed our way. Biggest official effect on us is auroras. Next important effect is drag on the satellites, signal loss and charging and overload. A G1 storm watch has been issued and is in effect for any minute now and for several hours once it starts but I am going to guess 5-8 hours before it gets here.

Earlier this morning between 09:00 and 10:00 UTC, three solar flares took place at nearly the same time. Two events around 1875 and 1882, and a minor flare around old region 1873. What a difference 1 month on the Sun makes. In September the visible disk nearly went spotless. Stay tuned as more flares are likely.

X2-FLARE BLASTS EARTH'S IONOSPHERE: Electromagnetic radiation from the X2-class solar flare of Oct. 25th had a significant effect on Earth's upper atmosphere. As a wave of ionization swept across the dayside of the planet, the normal propagation of shortwave radio signals was scrambled.
