For the past 8 years, Dirk Schapeler and his team at Artificial Muscle, Inc (a division of Bayer MaterialScience) have been toiling away on something special: Electroactive polymer-based actuators, with applications for sensors, pumps, valves, and robotics. Two years ago the team dubbed the technology "ViviTouch" and decided to concentrate their efforts on haptics for gaming. What they didn't realize at the time was how important their creation would be beyond the entertainment industry.
